Soap Soap Soap

It’s in our bathrooms, our kitchens; we even let it live in one of our most private of spaces: the shower. That’s right, today we’re talking about soap. But the cleansing step in our beauty routines has something of a sordid past. Turns out, the history of soap isn’t as squeaky clean as some would have you believe.

OMGross!

If you wanted to get clean approximately 5000 years ago in ancient Samaria, hitting up your local Walmart for a bottle of scented body wash simply wasn’t an option. Instead you’d spend bath time scrubbing up with the byproduct of a boiled mixture of animal fat and ashes. OMGross! But while it may sound yucky, it was also effective, and people from different cultures have been doing it for centuries.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: how on earth did people get clean with two of the greasiest, messiest substances they could possibly find? It’s all thanks to a chemical process called saponification. Today we think of soap as any cleansing agent that removes dirt, oil, and grime. But soap, in its truest form (not the irritating detergents we’re used to today) is a byproduct of this specific reaction. In saponification, the acids in a fat (from animals or vegetables) react with an alkali (ash, or lye) resulting in two products: soap and glycerin.

How Does Soap Work?

Soap molecules have something of a split personality. One end is attracted to water and the other is attracted to oil. This allows the soap to bond with dirt and grime on your skin and rinse them away as the other side of the molecules cling to water. A Modern-Day Alternative

So, what makes Perfectly Posh’s chunk soaps so special? Well for one, they’re actually soap!

This is rarer than you might think. As time went on, companies began to replace traditional soap with drying detergents. Much of what we call soap now, isn’t technically soap. Perfectly Posh’s chunks, on the other hand, are, in deed, soap, which means they don’t contain the potentially irritating and moisture-stripping ingredients sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sufate.

Our finely milled soaps may be created using anciently discovered chemical reactions, but the materials we use at Perfectly Posh are far more up to date! Our sustainable, responsibly sourced palm kernel oil is way more pure, pampering, and refined than animal fat and ash! (Significantly less gross than rubbing animal fat and ash on your body.)  And it’s certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

You’ll find the BOB logo on all our chunks. You’ll also find moisturizing ingredients like shea butter and glycerin in every inch of our soaps, the result of our thorough milling process. Check out our full line of chunk soaps here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
